Weather Station

The Jewish Day school is proud to be able to offer our students the best educational opportunities available. A significant educational development is the initiation of a Weather Bug national weather station to our Science department.  JDS won a grant that would allow us to provide a working national weather station to our students and community.  Together with the grant opportunity and the generosity of our JDS PTO, our students have access to our very own local weather station.

We were provided with the weather station and camera that is mounted on top of our building, as well as curricula, resources, teacher training, and more.  Our JDS weather station is periodically featured on channel 3 (KYW Philadelphia) news.  We have been a featured school weather station several  times.

These types of school weather stations are mounted across the United States.  When our students learn about hurricanes, they can go onto our weather station site and locate historical hurricanes such as Katrina and review footage and information.  Even more importantly – if there is a hurricane occurring while the students are learning, they can “fly” into the eye of the hurricane by hooking up with other schools’ weather stations in the area and see firsthand the destruction and effects of a hurricane.  Our weather station interacts with all of the weather stations in the country in “real time” and allows our students to learn about weather, space, and more, in a totally interactive way.

The jds weather station is just another example of the incredible educational experiences our students at JDS have available to them.
